Stop & Chat: April 23 - Daegu Day 3

I woke up at 5:30 on Sunday. Why? I have absolutely no clue. I could have easily woken up between 7:30 and 7:45 and had more than enough time to get ready before we left for the day. Instead I found myself awake at 5:30 feeling absolutely wonderful. Now that I've synced up my Fitbit to my phone's app, I can see that while I had less than 6 hours of sleep, I turned/moved only twice. Considering my normal nights are full of 20+ restless moments, I would say that was a very great night's sleep.

I surfed the internet for a few hours, until everyone else was up and ready to go. Someone made an egg, bacon, and sausage sandwich platter for all of us. While the others ate I packed all of our belongings. We knew we would not be coming back before we set off back to Seoul.

There were significantly less people for Day 2 than Day 1. If you paid for the tournament you got in for all 3 rounds, but I'd say only half of the people came back for Day 2. On M's card there were supposed to be 5 people. Two never showed up. It ended up being M, another gentleman with the same name, and a Korean. The issue we had with Day 2 is we had to throw from the Blue/Pro tee pad. None of the players on our card had played the course from Blue before. The Korean ended up calling someone and asking them to send someone over who knew the course.

M and I were rather stressed for this round. To make sure we got to the railway station in time we set ourselves a time that he would have to leave the course, even if Round 3 wasn't done yet. That time was 12:15

Round 3 started at 9:30. It took us an hour and a half to get through the first 6 holes. There are 18 total. A huge part of it was our inexperience with some of the rules of the course. Another part of it was how hard each hole was. There were island shots and out of bounds lines everywhere. If the Korean hadn't dropped out due to his shoulder, I doubt M would have finished the course before our stop time.

As it was we had to stick around for another 45 minutes before a taxi came. That gave us time to eat the same meal that was provided for Day 1 and say our goodbyes to everyone. Two other people took the same taxi as us since they had to catch the train as well.

M and I got very lucky. We did not buy any tickets ahead of time. We were told on Saturday that getting back to Seoul might be difficult, as end of weekend traffic back to the city tends to get crowded. We were still able to get bullet train tickets. We could have gone with a cheaper, slower route, but M wanted to get home and sleep because he was supposed to have CQ the next day, which is a 24 hour shift.

The train arrived at Seoul station at 3:30. While I was on the train, a friend invited me out with some others to an event called The Great Escape. I was still feeling fantastic and I said I would definitely go if we made it home in time. M opted not to go because of his shift the next day.

We got home shortly after 5. I quickly showered and dressed before the friend, C, picked me up and we headed out. There were 4 of us. We ate out together before going to our reservation for the room. The Great Escape is an event where you're locked in a room for a certain amount of time. This particular event was for one hour. You're given a premise for a mystery you need to solve. In your given time, you and your group need to use the clues in the room(s) to solve the mystery. The four of us solved our mystery with 00:02:26 remaining. It was fun, but by the end of it I was finally feeling tired from my entire day's worth of traveling and activities. I got home a little after 10, and crashed.

Thus ends my exciting Daegu weekend trip. This is most likely something M and I will do again, as there are frequent disc golf tournaments at that course and we both enjoyed ourselves while we were there. We're waiting for M to accrue some more leave days, as he spent all of them right before we went to Korea. Something about time with family? :P

Have you played disc golf before? Do you even know what it is?

  1. Sounds like a packed yet fun day! There are lots of disc golf courses around here. I watch people play sometimes but have never tried it myself. Frisbee is not something I am really all that good at. Kind of like bowling and horseshoes. The Great Escape greatly intrigues me! There is one in Orlando on International Drive that we pass a lot and looks fun. I might do it with friends one day.

    1. I'm not much of a disc golfer myself. Michael inflated my skills to anyone who would listen, but I feel like I'm mediocre at best. It's a fun sport to watch, though!
Definitely try The Great Escape! It's super fun if you like a challenge and there are ways you can get extra hints if you get stuck. For us, we all had to dance. I'm glad their definition of 'dancing' was very relaxed because I doubt any of the body shaking I did was a real dance. LOL
