Band of Bloggers - Vol. 22/October 2017

Halloween BoB Header Photo WM'd
Once upon a time, in a galaxy far, far away, it was a dark and stormy night. So dark and stormy, in fact, the power had gone out, and you had naught but a handful of scented three-wick candles with which to light your way. As you crept down the darkened hallway of the cabin in the woods along the picturesque shores of Crystal Lake that you and your randy teenage friends rented from the eerily helpful maintenance man back at the abandoned service station with all the weird pelts hanging outside, you caught a glimpse of movement out of the corner of your eye. Whirling madly about, you brandished your glass jar of Pumpkin Cupcake Crunch, set to square off against any number of undead, masked killers with nothing but the three-wick in your hand and your own blazing moxie. Then, with a chuckle of embarrassed relief, you realized it was just your lucky Chucky Doll figurine - must have fallen off the shelf when that puzzle doodad covered in all the bizarre symbols you found in the basement behind the walled-up root cellar tipped over. Pressing a hand to your fluttering heart, you shook your head as you contemplated the massive, flammable waxcident that nearly was - heavens, THAT certainly could have been messy!

And then THAT'S when one of your friends came banging through the swinging door of the kitchen, catching you square in the back, throwing you forward and the candle up, and out, and then eventually down, where it exploded in a geyser of molten wax, covering everything in the livingroom with burnt orange pumpkin spice, including the creepy two-way mirror and the snarling wolf head affixed to the wall. Congratulations; now you're really in a horror movie!

Oh, we've all been there, and not just waxies, but anyone who enjoys a hobby that occasionally errs towards the messy and dangerous (jest not, glitter glue burns are a real thing!) So this month, in honour of Halloween, we're taking a look at our most monstrous pastime nightmares - the waxcidents and beauty blunders and crafting calamities that haunt our hobby dreams. What's the worst hobby hazard you've ever suffered? And do you have any magical tips for cleaning Pumpkin Cupcake Crunch out of carpet fibers (or wolf fur)?

Soapmaking. It's a very rewarding, but also incredibly infuriating hobby. One thing could go wrong and an entire batch of soap could be ruined, or worse, expelled.

Back in my earliest soapmaking days, I hadn't fully grasped the importance of heat in regards to soapmaking. In short, hotter = soap thickens faster, coolder = soap thickens slower. At this time I still liked using a thrift find crock pot to melt down the oils and butters I planned to use in my batches of soap.

On this particularly fateful day, I forgot to turn off the crock pot once all the butters had melted down, and it was still around 100°F when I added in my water-lye mixture. I stirred once. I stirred twice. And the soap immediately hardened up. Like, finished soap hard. Like, I couldn't get it out of the crock pot hard.

Thus began the longest cleanup session I've ever had, with none of the final product I had grown so accustomed to enjoying. The lesson stuck with me. Now, I always check the temperature of the oils before I start the saponification process.

On a more personal note, I've been having a lot of jaw and tooth pain over the past few weeks. It culminated in an emergency visit to the dentist yesterday morning, where I had an impacted tooth removed. I don't know how some people have their teeth removed and go straight back to work like nothing has happened. I'm nauseous whenever I'm doing anything that's not laying down. I can't eat very much - in fact, I'm currently subsisting off of chicken broth and water. The site of the tooth is in pain, even with the pain medications I've been given to keep it under control. In short, I'm a big, miserable baby right now.

Stop & Chat: Word Vomit

Michael returned from his work trip on Friday the 1st. It was a nice reunion. I didn't realize how much I missed him until he was back. I guess absence really does make the heart grow fonder. :P

Band of Bloggers - Vol. 21/September 2017

Welcome back to the September Band of Bloggers! It's that time of year again. School is starting back up. Trees are starting to turn. North America is recovering from the apocalypse brought on by the eclipse. Wait, what?

The eclipse that visited most of the United States on August 21st has been described as a once in a lifetime experience. The next eclipse to cover the US from coast to coast will not come until 2045.

That brings us to our question this month. What is your once in a lifetime experience?

It feels like such a cop-out response, but our time in Korea has really been a once in a lifetime experience. I do not think I would have gotten the same experience if Korea had happened at any other point in my life. If I were younger, I would not have appreciated it as much as I do now and would have ignored all of the opportunities for personal growth. If I were older, I could have been too wrapped up in our family or my career to take the time to enjoy what this country has to offer.

Korea has altered my perception of the world. Of America. Of my own perception of an open heart and mind. It has challenged my viewpoints on culture and politics. Until Korea, my entire view of the world was based from my home in the US.

Korea has helped me finish healing hurts and moving forward in life. Back in 2016, I said I wanted to move forward. I have been able to do so in ways here that could never have happened in the US. Stepping outside to a foreign world, with a foreign language, culture, and people staring me right in the face has pushed my comfort zones so much further than the US could have ever done. That's not to say that I could not have gone through all of this growth back home. Things have just lined up in Korea in such a way that it felt easy and effortless. The end result is this country will forever have a soft spot in my heart.

If you'd like to play along at home, please feel free to answer this question in the comment section below, and we hope you'll visit these Band of Blogger blogs and help support the blogger community!

Scent Throw: 3/3 This filled the kitchen, hallway, office, and entryway.

Melting Power: 4/5 I got about 7 hours of scent from a piece of this chunk.

Glitterati - Little Black Dress/Tea & Cakes

Date Received: June 22, 2016

Weight Melted: 0.4 oz

Location of Warmer: Guest room, in tealight warmer

Cold Sniff: 5/5 How do I describe this? A delectably exciting blend that brings to mind sultry date nights and a nice drink. Not too musky, not too heavy. Hides somewhere between bakery and 'other.'

Warm Sniff: 5/5

Scent Strength: 2.5/3

Scent Throw: >3/3 This filled the guest room, hallway, entryway, and kitchen.

Melting Power: 5/5 I got about 11 hours from a piece of this chunk, and the scent lingered long after I stopped melting. Definitely a strong blend with lots of staying power.

Glitterati - Strawberry/Eucalyptus/Cucumber Mint

Date Received: June 22, 2016

Weight Melted: 0.4 oz

Location of Warmer: Living room, in tealight warmer

Cold Sniff: 4/5 A combination of sweet strawberries, cucumber mint, and a blast of eucalyptus to wake you up.

Warm Sniff: 4/5 No surprises once melted.

Scent Strength: 1/3 It's there, but it's a surprisingly light scent.

Scent Throw: 3/3 This filled the entire living room and a little bit of the highway.

Melting Power: 4/5 I got a little under 6 hours of scent from a piece of this chunk.

Repurchase: Yes, though I think I will try and melt a little more next time. This scent was a lot lighter than I expected!

Glitterati - Blue Cotton Candy/Pink Chiffon

Scent Description: None available/exotic fruits, vanilla orchid, sweet vanilla, whipped chiffon musk.

Date Received: June 22, 2016

Weight Melted: 0.6 oz

Location of Warmer: Guest room, in tealight warmer

Cold Sniff: 4/5 A nice, sweet, slightly musky blend between sweet and sultry goodness and a strong kick to the face.

Warm Sniff: 4/5 No surprises once melted. These two blends mix together quite nicely.

Scent Strength: 2/3

Scent Throw: >3/3 This scent burst out of the closed guest room door and added the entryway and hallway to its fragrant range.

Melting Power: 5/5 About one fifth of a chunk lasted about 10 hours. Talk about a whammy.

Repurchase: Yes! It's a good thing I'm on both the mystery and customs list that are being worked on.

I realized the other day that I hadn't been melting very much Glitterati. I couldn't figure out why until I remembered that my Glitterati was in a completely separate drawer from the rest of my wax. When I reach for wax, I reach by scent category and not vendor. When putting away my Glitterati stash last summer I had no space in my drawers and ended up putting it all in its own drawer. Thus, The Forgotten Wax.

Thus begins Project Glitterati. I'm going to try to exclusively melt Glitterati until I've melted every scent at least once. This kind of sucks, because I don't have many Fall related scents in my Glitterati stash and I'm itching to start melting for Fall. All the more reason to melt through my Glitterati faster, muahahah! How many times can I say Glitterati in one paragraph? Glitterati.

Lasting Scent Candles - Sweet Kisses

Scent Description: Cakes and frostings, sweet kisses. Formerly Sweet Decadence.

Date Received: April 8, 2016

Weight Melted: 0.8 oz

Location: Living room, in tealight warmer

Cold Sniff: 2/5 Has a very strong waxy note to it. Generic sweet vanilla scent.

Warm Sniff: 3/5 That waxy note died down a lot, but was still there. There was an added sweet bakery note to the generic vanilla.

Scent Strength: 1/3

Scent Throw: 2/3 Filled most of the living room.

Melting Power: 3/5 I got about 5 hours of scent from half of a scent shot.

Repurchase: Pass. That waxy note was just a little too strong for me to fully enjoy this scent.

Thursday, August 31, 2017

Beezy Tarts - Caramel Macchiato

Scent Description: Caramel, French Vanilla Creamer, & Freshly Brewed Coffee.

Date Received: May 17, 2016

Weight Melted: 0.9 oz

Location of Warmer: Kitchen, in tealight warmer

Cold Sniff: 4/5 A typical coffee type scent. I usually associate this smell with Yankee Candle stores.

Warm Sniff: 4/5 A delicious, not-too-nutty, not-too-milky rendition of coffee. Slightly bakery-ish.

Scent Strength: 2/3

Scent Throw: 3/3 This filled the entire kitchen, office, hallway, and entryway.

Melting Power: 5/5 Half of a scent shot lasted 9 and a half hours.

Repurchase: I'm going to go with yes. I really enjoyed this scent!

I don't think I've found 'The One' in terms of coffee blends so much as my nose has just undergone some changes. I feel like I'm less picky than I was a year ago. Either way, it opens up the scent horizons for me.

Satin Suzie Scents - Blackberry Jam Butter Cookies

Scent Description: Fresh baked butter cookies with a dollop of tart blackberry jam.

Date Poured: October 2, 2016

Weight Melted: 0.7 oz

Location of Warmer: Living room, in tealight warmer

Cold Sniff: 4/5 Slightly crunchy cookies with a healthy serving of sweet blackberries.

Warm Sniff: 4/5 That crunchy note to the cookies died down a bit, leaving an overall creamy BBJBC blend.

Scent Strength: 2/3

Scent Throw: 3/3 This filled the entire living room.

Melting Power: 4/5  Half of a scent shot lasted a little under seven hours.

Repurchase: Yes! I guess my nose is going through another one of its changes, as I no longer find 'crunchy' bakery to be as off-putting as I used to.

Now that the temps are starting to drop, I've started melting again. Woo hoo!! Celebrate with me!

Read - Bloom: Finding Beauty in the Unexpected

Bloom: Finding Beauty in the Unexpected
by Kelle Hampton
2012

From the outside looking in, Kelle Hampton had the perfect life: a beautiful two-year-old daughter, a loving husband, a thriving photography career, and great friends. When she learned she was pregnant with her second child, she and her husband, Brett, were ecstatic. Her pregnancy went smoothly and the ultrasounds showed a beautiful, healthy, high-kicking baby girl.

But when he new daughter was placed in her arms in the delivery room, Kelle knew instantly that something was wrong. Nella looked different than her two-year-old sister, Lainey, had at birth. As she watched friends and family celebrate with champagne toasts and endless photographs, a terrified Kelle was certain that Nella had Down syndrome - a fear her pediatrician soon confirmed. Yet gradually Kelle's fear and pain were vanquished by joy, as she embraced the realization that she had been chosen to experience an extraordinary and special gift.

Bloom takes readers on a wondrous journey through Nella's first year of life - a gripping, hilarious, and intensely poignant trip of transformation in which a mother learns that perfection comes in all different shapes. It is a story about embracing life and really living it, of bearing fearless and accepting difference, of going beyond constricting definitions of beauty, and of the awesome power of perspective. As Kelle writes, "There is us. Our Family. We will embrace this beauty and make something of it. We will hold our precious gift and know that we are lucky."

Hello, It's Me...

Hi, there! I figured I would step in and let everyone know I'm slowly returning to technology and the internet! First off - everything's fine! No need to worry.

As my classes wrapped up, I found myself at the computer even when I did not need to be, forsaking a lot of other activities for what had become an ingrained habit. Computer first, above all else.

As the weather heated up and I tried to figure out what to do with my newfound free time, anything computer related fell to the wayside. I haven't been on Facebook for almost three months, and I did not log into blogger for almost two - the longest time I've completely neglected the blog since 2014. As bad as I felt for leaving without letting my fellow bloggers know, I also felt it was silly to feel such guilt over a hobby. So instead I resolved to just enjoy myself and let the blog wait until I naturally returned to it, and the computer, and the internet.

Bunny and Hammy are doing wonderful. We eventually moved their homes into the bedroom so they could be in a more temperature-controlled environment. As part of that, I bit the bullet and bought two 12" Silent Spinners. A bit more pricey, but they truly are silent. The only thing I hear is the pitter-patter of their feet against the wheel when they run, and the occasional squeak of the wheel's base being moved around.

I went to my first noraebong, or singing room (karaoke room), with L and C. It was a wonderful night of drinks and singing until our voices gave out. I've never been to a karaoke place of any sort, Korean or American, so this was a great experience that I will cherish.

I helped run a summer camp for the kids with L and C as well. It was great watching various aged children cooperate and learn together. I also got told I talk like a farmer by one darling little girl. It was right after I said "alright" kind of how Matthew McConaughey says it in that famous line of his, so that may have something to do with it.

For you Game of Thrones fans... prepare yourselves. I've finally started watching the series. I just finished Season 1 the other day and am slowly starting Season 2. Be proud that I've finally joined in on this! It's taken so long!

So, long story short, I'm finally returning to the world of the internet and technology. Please bare with me as I get back into the hang of posting and commenting/replying. I've missed you all so dearly!

Band of Bloggers - Vol. 20/August 2017

Band of Bloggers Photo Pop quiz, hotshot: How well do you know your favourite Band of Bloggerette? Sure, we're all reasonably up to date on each other's interests, hobbies and the pretty, glittery things that make our hearts go pitter pat, but when it comes to the vitally important markers of a person's character - favourite band, desert island scent, fight stance in the zombie apocalypse - how well do we truly know our virtual neighbours? :) Let's delve into 10 deeply random questions and find out, shall we?

Shit, the questions have started already. Uh... I'M READY?!?!

1. No really, zombie apocalypse survival strategy: Fight or flight?
Probably flight. I have no life experience to truly show me how I would react in a life or death situation, so I won't be bold enough to assume I would suddenly grow a pair and find the ability to fight.

2. You've been a bad, bad kitty and you have just one final meal coming your way. What's on your plate?
Spicy Chicken Alfredo. Don't bother making it, just bring me the ingredients. I'll make it myself.

3. Aside from wax (or nail polish, or crafting supplies, or beauty products) what item do you have major multiples of?
Stickers. It's gotten even worse with my newfound planner obsession... and the purchase of the printer... and the purchase of sticker paper... and other various sticker making supplies...

4. You've just won the lottery. Before best friends you didn't even know you had begin to show up on your doorstep, what's the first thing you buy without even thinking twice?
My freedom. What a weird way to phrase it. The actual thread of my thoughts while answering that question was "my freedom; pay off all our debt."

5. Biggest celebrity crush? This can be anybody - an actress, a musician, a fictional character from a favourite movie, book or television show, or maybe even an historical figure.
I can't say I really have one. No specific person comes to mind and I don't watch enough TV nowadays to consistently see a person I'll think is cute. I'll go with Chris Evans, I guess?

6. Flats or heels? Or are you running barefoot through life like some sort of hippie?
I absolutely love heels, but I can never wear them with Michael. I'm a little taller than him, so wearing heels makes the height difference much more noticeable and throws off our equilibrium for holding hands, dancing, etc. So in my head I'm a heel kind of girl, but in the real world I wear flats.

7. Whether it was created through a customs order or simple pick-and-mix blending at home, what's the greatest scent blend you've ever stumbled upon?
Solstice Scents Snowshoe Pass and White Fox. I talked about it in this and it's still a blend I crave in the hotter Summer months.

8. It's snack time! Are you reaching for the sweet or the salty?
Based off my normal eating habits, salty. I get my sweet fix from my coffee.

9. What's a personal style moment you'd never care to re-live?
It wasn't by choice, but I had a really short haircut in 7th grade that made it look like I had an afro going on. The teasing (read: bullying) that arose from my hair was unpleasant, to say the least.

10. You are going to live in a biodome beneath the sea for the next three years and have been allotted space for just ONE book (tiny dome!) What cherished book will keep you entertained for the next 1095 days?
Does a multi-volume mass book count? If so, I choose the Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis

Stop & Chat: The Vet Visit

This morning I discovered that Bunny was having trouble breathing. She seemed to go into a coughing fit every so often, waking herself up while she pathetically squeaked and wheezed her way around her bed. When I held her, I felt a rattling in her ribcage and she seemed disoriented.

Band of Bloggers - Vol. 17/May 2017

May, May, May. Welcome back, ol' friend! May is a turning point in the year for a lot of people. The school year is almost over, summer is coming soon, and those mild months will soon become scorchers. The birthstone of May is the emerald, which symbolizes love and success. This month, we're focusing on those two things!

We all love something with all our hearts, so tell us what you love the most. It could be the story of how you met your spouse/significant other, where you got your pet, or a nod to your parental units.

I'm going to go a slightly different route and say that I love myself the most. Me. Myself. I. It sounds so selfish when I read it over, and I get a twinge of narcissistic pleasure at acknowledging myself as my own most loved one, but it's an important thing for me to acknowledge.
There was once a time when I could not find it in me to love myself. I couldn't even say I liked myself. All I saw when I looked in the mirror were my flaws, my shortcomings, my failures. I believe that I could not have learned to love the people and world around me so wholly if I had not gone through such a long journey in learning to love myself.
I won't pretend to stand behind any of those "you cannot xyz others until you learn to xyz yourself" sayings. I will say that in working on my relationship with myself, my relationship with others has improved immensely.

In terms of success, and keeping it blog related, have you ever participated in and/or completed a successful "project wax" or spring wax/perfume/makeup/scented product purge? Have you ever had so much product you felt the need to use it all up before your bought again?

In late 2015 I purged an immense amount of wax products in preparation for our move to Korea. I have worked long and hard to rid myself of the habit of stockpiling everything I buy. I had a very nasty mentality that if I used up a product then I had somehow wasted it.
I'm currently at a point where I need to use up a lot more of my wax before I can allow myself to buy again. It works out that we're heading into summer and I already don't buy for fear of my smelly goodies melting on their way to me. A benefit of my unofficial wax-buying hiatus is it frees up that money to go toward other ventures. Like hanji. Or makeup. Or stickers. Buying stickers, you ask? Noooo, young padawan. Making stickers.

Please, feel free to answer these questions in the comments section below!

Stop & Chat: Last Week of April

Wednesday the 26th was the first in a several-day whirlwind of activity.

C called me late in the morning to ask if I wanted to go on a quick trip to Insadong with her. I quickly threw on some clothes, grabbed my backpack, and walked to our meeting point.

Stop & Chat: Hamster Lids, Stickers, and FACE MASKS!!

Remember when I said I was done buying plants? That all but my heartiest of hearty snake plants liked dying off and I was tired of wasting money on them? Yeeeah.

Michael went to the Garden 5 the other day and sent some pictures of the plants they had. I couldn't resist asking him to pick up a few. I've been craving more life in the house. Plant life, that is. We have more than enough animal life going on currently. LOL

Stop & Chat: Hamster Snacks

This is a shorter post, but I wanted to share this very small but incredibly rewarding project: homemade hamster treats!

The hamsters have settled into their new homes swimmingly. I've reached a bit of a bump in their hamster-lid making adventure because we do not have some of the tools required and they were not on post like we'd hoped. Amazon, it is!

Sniff My Tarts - Whipped Cream/Watermelon Cake

Scent Description:  Delicious, fluffy whipped cream with hints of whipped churned butter, blonde sugar cane, Madagascar vanilla, and vanilla extract/Fresh sliced Watermon and rich decadent cake.

Date Reviewed: December 27, 2016

Weight Melted: 0.9 oz

Location of Warmer: Living room, in tealight warmer

Cold Sniff: 5/5 Deliciously juicy watermelons smothered in whipped cream and used as icing for a creamy cake.

Warm Sniff: 5/5 No real surprises once melted. At the very end of the melt the watermelon took on an artificial note.

Scent Strength: 2/3

Scent Throw: >3/3 This filled the living room, hallway, kitchen/dining area, and entryway.

Melting Power: 4/5 The 6 hour mark is when the watermelon took on an artificial plastic note and I dumped the wax.

Repurchase: Yup! Though I have a major lesson to learn: never leave coffee in the main room this wax is melting in. My cup of coffee tasted and smelled like waxy watermelon cake. Did I still drink it all? Yup. Do I regret it. Super yup. I needed a weak long break from that specific coffee before I could smell it without reliving the watermelon-wax taste. LOL

Band of Bloggers: April 2017 - Volume 15

It's that time of year again! As the warmer weather soothes stiff joints and brushes off the last vestiges of winter, homes beg for the same fresh start everyone promised themselves at the beginning of the year. Clothes are donated, rooms are scrubbed, and yards are tended. While the fauna leave their winter dens or return from long migrations, the world blooms with new growth in vibrant splashes of color.

For April's Band of Bloggers post, we will answer a few questions about Spring and the ever-loved Spring Cleaning. Feel free to join in and answer these questions in the comments below!

Do you decorate for Spring?
I don't normally, but it's not because I don't want to. I'm a frugal person, and up until Korea I had about 0% interest in my home decor. Give me the cheapest thing that has a function and I'm good.
I probably won't decorate for this Spring season, but when all the themed decor goes on sale I hope to stock up for future seasons.

Are there any products you find yourself reaching for as the weather warms? This can be anything; food, clothing, bath and body, wax, you name it!
Bath and Body Works Country Chic is synonymous with Spring to me. My freshman year of college I had a roommate who liberally applied this fragrance every morning come Spring semester. The scent eventually grew on me and now I can't go through the season without lightly using the scent.
I reach for lavender scented products more. I know, lavender is pretty much an all-the-time kind of scent for me, but it's possible I can reach for it more! Herbal lavender heavily reminds me of Michael's time at basic, and even though I had a lot of hard times there it's a pleasant reminder of all the growth I went through while he was gone.

Do you participate in the Spring Cleaning craze?
Yup. Whether I want to or not I tend to clean more around this time of year. The communities I live in help encourage spring cleaning by offering community yard sales, swaps, and all other "get rid of your stuff" gatherings.
In Korea, yellow dust season starts around spring and it becomes exceptionally important to keep our home as clean as possible. I find it's easier to maintenance clean every day instead of waiting for dirt to pile up and mass clean every other week. The cleanliness helps us sleep better and the constant movement in order to sweep and mop helps keep an active lifestyle on days where the air quality makes physical activity less than ideal.

Stop & Chat: Birthday Celebrations

That's my Lubbie (rhymes with hubby). He spoils me.
I'm 24. On one hand, it feels old. On the other, I'm still the baby of all of my friend groups.Yes, I know, it's not actually old, but it's the oldest I've ever been (har har, I so funny) so a new age will always feel "old" on me.

Michael worked on my birthday, but he was off for the three days leading up to it. You know what that means - Spoil Liz Time!

Stop & Chat: The Too Much Gene

Hi, my name is Liz and I have the Too Much Gene.

I do not know what it means to dip my toes in to anything. It takes me a long time to finally jump into something, yes. But once I finally take that jump it's as if I don't know what self restraint means. I've talked about this several times before, but I feel like it stands to be mentioned again. Especially with the absolute novel of a post I have incoming.

So. Where have I been?

Sniff My Tarts - Pink Stilletto/Iced Pineapple/Blonde Moment

Scent Description: Sweet sugary crystals, sweet red fruits, raspberry, pure spun cotton candy/fresh cut pineapples with an ozony green top note/iced champagne mixed with rich sweet raspberry and cranberry.

Date Received: December 27, 2016

Weight Melted: 1.0 oz

Location of Warmer: Living room, in tealight warmer

Cold Sniff: 4/5 A deliciously sweet and slightly effervescent blend.

Warm Sniff: 3/5 The scents all melded together into a very generic sweet scent. None of the champagne or pineapples were noticeable.

Scent Strength: 0.5/3 While a light scent strength isn't necessarily a bad thing, here it was. The scent itself was so light I wasn't entirely sure I was melting anything at times. It was only once I left the room and came back that I smelled the very light scent of "sweet."

Scent Throw: 2/3 This filled most of the living room.

Melting Power: 3/5 One tart lasted a little under 5 hours.

Repurchase: No. It's such a pity how much the scents died down once this was warmed. I had high hopes for it.

Vintage Chic Scents - Strawberry Jackie O

Scent Description: Fresh strawberries birthday cake marshmallow noel.

Date Poured: February 8, 2016

Weight Melted: 0.7 oz

Location of Warmer: Kitchen, in tealight warmer

Cold Sniff: 4.5/5 A sweet and delectably berry take on the ever loved Jackie O.

Warm Sniff: 4.5/5 No surprises once melted.

Scent Strength: 1/3

Scent Throw: 3/3 This filled the kitchen/dining area and hallway.

Melting Power: 4/5 I got  a little under 7 hours of scent from half of this tart.

Repurchase: Definitely, if I ever finish melting through the rest of this rose. I have a habit of letting wax sit, so I'm trying not to let that get too much worse this time around.

Olde Primitive Treasures - Lord of Misrule

Scent Description: Patchouli, sandalwood blend with hints of citrus and vetiver.

Date Received: March 1, 2016

Weight Melted: 1.2 oz

Location of Warmer: Kitchen, in tealight warmer.

Cold Sniff: 5/5 Delicious LoM, what's not to love?

Warm Sniff: 5/5 No surprises once melted.

Scent Strength: 1/3

Scent Throw: 3/3 This filled the kitchen/dining area and hallway with its scent.

Melting Power: 3/5 I got about 5.5 hours of scent from one tart.

Repurchase: Yes, but time is limited. I think. Lara moved all operations to her website Oh, My Tarts! with the intention of using up all of her supplies before moving to Germany. While writing this post I looked for more information and saw no more mention of their move, so I'm not entirely sure what's going on with the company or if it's actually shutting down. Either way, everything has been rebranded under Oh My Tarts and you should try them out. :)

Lush Shampoo Bars

I've known about Lush and their shampoo bars for over five and a half years. I've tried their makeup, conditioner, bubble bars, bath bombs, body butters, hand oils, hair creams, and jar shampoos. I have gushed thick and thin about some products and given my best "thanks but no thanks" to others. Why, then, has it taken so long for me to try out the very first product of theirs that I discovered in the depths of YouTube?

The answer may never be known, but now I've had some time to play with these three shampoo bars and can give my thoughts.

Sniff My Tarts - Sugared Violets & Blueberry Noel

Excuse me while I try and apply my normal reviewing system to a hand-blended... well, blend.

Scent Description: No scent description available.

Weight Melted: Sugared Violets 0.6 oz, Blueberry Noel 0.7 oz

Location of Warmer: Living room, in tealight warmer

Cold Sniff: 4/5? How do I quantify this blend when the wax doesn't want to smush together enough to let both scents invade my nostrils? From what I could tell this seemed like a promising blend.

Warm Sniff: 5/5 I have a hard time describing florals. I always pick up on something powdery which influences the scent categories I blend my florals with. The most successful I've found is bakery, which contributed to this concoction. In short: a lovely springtime blend. In long? The warmth of late spring climbing in from open windows, promising comfortable warmth and happiness before the heat of summer sets in. Nearby fields of flowers boast of long adventures and games with friends. All the while, home beckons you with the scent of something sweet, something baked, something wonderful. It hints at blueberries, but you can't be sure while you're laying in the field of violets. As you drift off to sleep, these scents cling to you like dew to morning grass.

Scent Strength: 2/3

Scent Throw: >3/3 This filled the living room, bedroom, hallway, office, and part of the kitchen/dining area with its sweet springtime goodness.

Melting Power: 5/5 I got a little under 11 hours of scent from this concoction.

Re-Blend: Definitely! If you plan to order this as a blend from SMT, I highly suggest that you keep the Blueberry Noel at 50% or more of the blend, otherwise it will be drowned out by the Sugared Violets. I initially made this 2/3 violets and was extremely surprised at how much it overpowered the blueberry noel.

Sniff My Tarts - Cotton Candy Frosting/Grape/Pomegranate

Scent Description: Strawberry, Raspberry, Plum, sugary crystals and sweet vanilla/A strong, sweet and sour grape aroma/none available.

Date Received: December 27, 2016

Weight Melted: 0.9 oz

Location of Warmer: Kitchen, in tealight warmer

Cold Sniff: 2/5 There was an incredibly strong artificial grape note. Almost like a sweet, tart, cheaply scented/flavored children's makeup.

Warm Sniff: 5/5 That weird scent note completely died off, leaving a cavity inducing medley of tart grape, sweet pomegranate, and slightly creamy cotton candy frosting.

Scent Strength: 2/3

Scent Throw: >3/3 This filled the kitchen/dining area, hallway, office, part of the living room, and entryway with its sweet temptations.

Melting Power: 4/5 One chunk got a little over 7 hours of strong scent.

Repurchase: Definitely yes! Yet another prime example of why you cannot judge a blend by its cold sniff.

Sniff My Tarts - Marshmallow Noel/Vanilla Bean Noel/Blueberry Noel

Scent Description: "SMT Blend"/A rich, sweet vanilla sugar cookie with a slightly roasted marshmallow background and a hint of caramel/"SMT Blend"

Date Received: December 27, 2016

Weight Melted: 0.8 oz

Location of Warmer: Kitchen, in tealight warmer

Cold Sniff: 5/5 My beloved blueberry noel mixed with a healthy heaping of creamy vanilla.

Warm Sniff: 5/5 I expect vanilla scents to really tone down other scents when I blend them, but the blueberry noel stayed incredibly strong. I'm psyched about that. As for the end result - just a super creamy vanilla version of blueberry noel. Same enough to be blueberry noel, but different enough to warrant its own purchase.

Scent Strength: 2/3

Scent Throw: 3/3 Filled the entire kitchen/dining area, hallway, and office.

Melting Power: 5/5 Half of a pie slice got me 10 hours of scent, and I probably could have pushed for more if I wanted.

Repurchase: Yes! As I stated in the Warm Sniff section, this blend is different enough from SMT's Blueberry Noel blend that I would recommend anyone who is a fan of vanilla and Blueberry Noel give this one a shot. I know I'm going to buy more once this runs out!

Band of Bloggers: March 2017 Volume 15

Welcome to the March edition of Band of Bloggers! Hopefully this month begins to bring more temperate weather and the first signs of spring! In my neck of the woods, conditions have been alternating between crazy heavy rain/high winds and beautiful sunshine and blooming flowers. I hope the weather will stabilize a bit this month. Since the month of March usually holds the first signs of spring, that begs the question:

What scent are your favorite scents to melt and wear for spring?

Are you a fan of traditional spring scents such as florals, fresh/clean, earthy, herbal, etc?

Do you consider yourself a seasonal melter (melting scents traditionally associated with a particular season in that season?)

I'm a big lavender lover, but I find that I amp up the lavender during the spring. It all started in 2014 with the release of Bath and Body Work's French Lavender & Honey scent, and I haven't looked back since then. As for scents I melt, I tend to lean more fresh, clean, or floral. Earthy scents have recently made their way into my rotation, but I haven't had the best luck finding earthy scents that work in wax form.

I would say I'm a fan of traditional Spring scents. I love fresh/clean all year round, though. It keeps me in the mood to keep the house clean. I didn't think anything besides floral was considered a traditional Spring scent, though.

As for seasonal melting.... I try to stay seasonal, but when I'm in a particular mood for a scent that fits better in Fall or Winter, I melt it. I can think of a very specific person who cringes every time I post about out of season melts. If only she knew how often I actually melt out of season...

We hope you'll join the fun and leave your own answer in the comments below.

And we hope you'll visit these Band of Blogger blogs and help support the blogger community!

Rosegirls - Crazy Pants Fluff Puffs

Scent Description: Strawberry jam, green apple, monster cookie (brown sugar, sweet & creamy butter, Madagascar vanilla), marshmallow smoothie.

Date Received: April 24, 2016

Weight Melted: 0.8 oz

Location of Warmer: Kitchen, in tealight warmer

Cold Sniff: 4.5/5 Sweet strawberry jam and a hint of apples mixed among cookie crumbs, then drizzled in icing. A sweet & bakery blend. I see why monster cookie is such a popular scent of RGs.

Warm Sniff: 4.5/5 I may have stumbled back on the RG train with this. No surprises, just delicious bakery awesomeness.

Scent Strength: 2/3

Scent Throw: >3/3 This filled the entire kitchen/dining area, hallway, office, entryway, and most of the living room.

Melting Power: 4/5 I got about 7 hours of scent from half a chunk.

Repurchase: Yes! This was delicious. I want to eat it. But I won't, because that's not advisable. LOL

Stop & Chat: February Update!

I shook up my schedule a little this past week. I found my mind slipping a lot and falling into the same fog I experienced at the end of 2016, so I tried to remedy the situation with said shake up.

I've gobbled through three books in the past week. To be fair, one book was 1/2 way done and the other was about 1/4 done, but I gobbled them nonetheless. It's lit a book-loving fire in my heart that I forgot I'd lost. It's also helped kickstart my writing again. I was having troubles with my Solstice Scents haul post, which was why it took so long to get up. I couldn't get the words to flow and my heart just wasn't in it. I'm still in a bit of a writer's rut, but now instead of blurry ideas I get more concrete shapes and sounds. Here's hoping the book I'm currently reading breaks down the rest of these walls!

I've concentrated on melting a lot of my larger quantities of wax that I've already reviewed on the blog. It's nice seeing my stash slowly shrink. It's hard not reaching for new-to-me scents just so I can have something to write about on the blog. I realized that it would really show if I kept forcing myself to write just to meet some imaginary post quota I kept setting for myself.

The weather finally warmed up enough to melt the snow and ice that's prevented Michael and I from going on our bike rides. Of course all this warm weather has brought in wind, so the bike rides we have taken have been much shorter than we would like. Better than nothing, though. I had a laughable moment while hanging with C on Friday. "The wind was really bad so we only went 10 miles on our bike ride yesterday." C could only look at me with an incredulous expression until I realized how snooty I sounded and laughed.

We still have Zelda The Lovebug. She'll be with us for another few days before her owners pick her up. Can you believe we've gone 6 days in 2017 without any pets in the house? Not counting the Cotton Balls (hamsters) of course. In a few weeks we're going to watch yet another poochie for two months!! The obsessively clean part of my brain is screaming at all the fur build up. LOL!

Speaking of Cotton Balls... Michael and I are horrible pet owners. I feel like every pet that comes through our house will leave feeling very confused about what their names are and what kind of animal they are. Each pet gets called a variety of, well, pet names based off their looks, fluffyness, and personality. Zelda is a lovebug who is secretly a cat. She's also been called a Cuddle Bug, Mrs. Spinnies (when she plays she twirls in circles with her ears flat on her head, like bully breeds do), Girlie, Beautiful, Old Man (she has long fur that sticks our of her ears), and Waggle Butt. Pebbles was a Mobile Fuzz Loaf/Echolocator (she would wander around the house yowling so much we joked that she was using it to find her way around). The hamsters are Fluffybutts, $30 Hamster Steaks (long story), Muffin Tops, and most recently Cotton Balls. Muffin Top and Cotton Balls came about from their little sleepy ball they form when they sleep.... or while they're eating... or when they're sitting still. Basically we call animals any and all names under the sun except their actual name.

Okay, it's not quite that dramatic, but we definitely call them a bunch of nicknames.

I think that covers it for this little update. I'm still on the fence for writing about my planner stickers. I have so much to say about it, but I'm afraid it will all come out in a large jumble of words that make little to no sense.

How have you been? Do you have silly nicknames for your pets?

Haul: Solstice Scents January 2017

This has been a long time coming. I originally wanted to make this order in late Spring/early Summer 2016, but it turns out the whole reason I was making my order was a Winter only scent! Snowshoe Pass, why did you make me wait so long?!

While I was on the site I decided to try out some other fragrances in eau de parfum form that I quite enjoyed in oil extrait form. I learned from Rose Mallow Cream that oil extrait and eau de parfum behave very differently once on the skin, and sometimes not in the way you expected or wanted. Perhaps a newbie lesson, one I needed to relearn, but a lesson nonetheless.

I placed my order on January 11th and it shipped... on January 11th. Less than four hours after I paid I already had a shipping notification. Talk about a fast TAT!

Stop & Chat: Bunco & The Love Museum

Warning: This post contains slightly NSFW pictures. And by slightly, I mean very.

I get to wake up to this cuddle bug every morning. This is Zelda, the poochie I've been watching since January 30th. Her owners will pick her up on February 24th. Pebbles was picked up on the 28th of January. I miss that little meowing furball, just like I'll miss this slightly larger snuggling furball when she's gone.

Location of Warmer: Kitchen, in tealight warmer

Cold Sniff: 4/5 Sweet and ever so slightly bubble galore with a healthy side of creamy, cakey goodness.

Warm Sniff: 4/5 No surprises once melted.

Scent Strength: 2/3

Lasting Scent Candles - Lavender Lullaby

Scent Description: Lavender, laundry

Date Received: April 8, 2016

Weight Melted: 0.9 oz

Location of Warmer: Living room, in tealight warmer

Cold Sniff: 4.5/5 I had to take a moment and clean up some coffee I spit out after reading my initial notes on this from my haul post. I'm happy to say that I no longer smell poopy diapers when sniffing at this. LOL Instead I get a pleasantly sweet lavender scent with a hint of detergent.

Warm Sniff: 4.5/5 No surprises once melted. The detergent lacks that bite normal detergent scents have, making it a very nice hey-time-to-clean-your-house type scent.

Scent Strength: 1.5/3

Scent Throw: >3/3 This filled the living room, some of the hallway, and most of the kitchen/dining area.

Melting Power: 5/5 I got about 10 hours of scent from half of a scent shot.

Repurchase: Yes! I love me some lavender themed clean scents.

Sniff My Tarts - Sweet Lavender/Marshmallow Cake/Sticky Pink Serendipity

Scent Description: No scent description available.

Date Received: March 7, 2016

Weight Melted: 1.0 oz

Location of Warmer: Living room, in tealight warmer

Cold Sniff: 4.5/5 Deliciously sweet and indulgent marshmallow cake with a healthy heaping of sweet lavender buds. Add in the sweet ghost of pink sugar and that's this blend. I can't say I picked up much on serendipity.

Warm Sniff: 4.5/5 Not many changes once melted. The serendipity became ever so slightly noticeable, but it did not change the overall scent.

Scent Strength: 1/3

Scent Throw: 3/3 This filled the entire living room.

Melting Power: 4/5 A quarter of a cookie lasted for a little under seven hours.

Repurchase: Probably not. I have other blends that turn out so similar to this I can't imagine buying this specific blend again. It was a very fun experiment, though!

Sniff My Tarts - Mexican Fried Ice Cream/Peach Coffee

Scent Description: Rich buttery whipped cream, vanilla bean, toasted nut, grated cinnamon, melted marshmallow/"SMT Blend"

Date Received: December 27, 2016

Weight Melted: 0.8 oz

Location of Warmer: Living room, in tealight warmer

Cold Sniff: 3/5 Lots of coffee with a hint of creamy peaches.

Warm Sniff: 2/5 Creamy ice cream, sweet coffee, and a healthy heaping of peaches. Unfortunately, I'm not quite a peach-and-coffee kind of person, so this didn't quite fit my fancy.

Scent Strength: 2/3

Scent Throw: 3/3 This filled the entire living room.

Melting Power: 4/5 I got a little over six hours of scent from one tart.

Repurchase: Nope. Not a fan of peaches and coffee. It was an interesting experiment, though.

Stop & Chat: Introspection - I Am Not A Good Person

I am not a good person.

The person I see when I look through a mirror is not the person I want to be. I see a bitter, self centered person. I see a hypocrite. I see a chameleon, someone so afraid of rocking the boat that she will change her entire persona depending on the group she's hanging around. I see someone afraid to challenge the world around her, unwilling to challenge herself, unable to rock the boat. I see someone full of that monster called pride, convinced she is somehow better than those around her while still playing into those petty games she claims to hate.

These character flaws are not things I'm unfamiliar with. Through the years I've convinced myself that I'm entitled to these flaws. I was a social outcast growing up, so it's only natural that I be bad at social interactions. It's completely acceptable for me to go days on end shutting my friends out with nary a word of what is happening or why I've started ignoring them. It's totally okay to stonewall people without a chance of closure or to explain why I might be upset with them. Because I have been mistreated in the past, it is okay to discredit any and all relationships I have. Because someone has wronged me in the past, I get to lord it over their heads whenever it is convenient to me. Even as I loudly claimed to myself and those closest to me that I was working on my flaws, I clung to them as if they were trophies I had earned because of some arbitrary trial I had been through. Even when others pointed these flaws out to me, I discredited their words because they had their own flaws they were holding on to. While their flaws may still be there, it shouldn't have lessened the meaning of their observations.

Band of Bloggers: February 2017 Volume 14

Welcome to the February edition of Band of Bloggers! You're probably getting tired of winter already as we start this new month. Maybe your thoughts are already turning towards spring, or maybe your all about Valentine's at the moment. Hearts and roses, chocolates and cards, and special someones making you smile . . . With all that love floating around, our question this month is quite simple.

What scent are you *loving* at the moment?
It can be anything from wax to perfume to body care to. . . whatever!

I have absolutely fallen in love with layering two perfumes I picked up recently: Solstice Scents Snowshoe Pass and White Fox. One is a sweet and sultry vanilla scent while the other adds in a woody moss to the mix. I happened across a mix of the two quite on accident (ie applying a different scent later in the day before the first had fully disappeared) and fell in love with how they complimented each other. I haven't posted my Solstice Scents haul yet as I'm still writing it up, but I couldn't help but write a little about it here. :)

We hope you'll join the fun and leave your own answer in the comments below.

Sniff My Tarts - Pink Sugar/Marshmallow Noel/Cotton Candy Frosting

Scent Description: Cotton Candy, Vanilla and Caramel, Bergamot and orange citrus top note, with touches of Berries, Muget, Strawberry, Plum, and a dry-down of Dry Fig Leaves, Musk, Anise, with just the slightest hint of Musk and Woodsy Aroma/"SMT Blend"/ Rich creamy frosting flavored with a STRONG base of sugary sweet cotton candy confection! Strawberry, Raspberry, Plum, sugary crystals and sweet vanilla. Jeez... this is what happens when I blend lots of well-defined scents together. LOL

Date Received: December 27, 2016

Weight Melted: 0.9 oz

Location of Warmer: Kitchen, in tealight warmer

Cold Sniff: 5/5 A delectably creamy take on the normal Pink Sugar. CCF is not quite noticeable, except perhaps in passing.

Warm Sniff: 5/5 The cotton candy frosting becomes more noticeable, amping up the sweet factor to this blend. It's no more sweet than pink sugar by itself, though, so if you can handle PS alone this will be fine.

Scent Strength: 1/3

Scent Throw: 3/3 This filled the kitchen/dining area, hallway, and office.

Melting Power: 4/5 Half of a chunk got a little under 8 hours of scent.

Repurchase: Definitely! This is one of those scents I like to melt when guests are coming over since it is light enough to not intrude and the less experienced nose accepts it as a strange vanilla blend.

Satin Suzie Scents - Oh Sugar! Cookie

Scent Description: Sugar cookies right out of the oven, notes of sugar, butter and buttercream.

Date Poured: November 23, 2016

Weight Melted: 0.8 oz

Location of Warmer: Kitchen, in tealight warmer

Cold Sniff: 5/5 A delectably creamy blend. I'm used to sugar cookie scents smelling incredibly crunchy, for lack of a better word. This one instead smells incredibly creamy. It smells like there might be something similar to VBN in here.

Warm Sniff: 5/5 There was an ever-so-slight crunchy note once this melted, but just enough to make sure this remained a sugar cookie scent. The rest was still an incredibly creamy vanilla sugar cookie blend.

Scent Strength: 1/3

Scent Throw: 3/3 This filled the kitchen/dining area, hallway, and office.

Melting Power: 3/5 I got about 5 and a half hours of scent from half a tart.

Repurchase: Yes! If you know me, you know I'm a sucker for creamy bakery, and that's exactly what this is. Now excuse me while I go bake a bunch of cookies...

First Impressions: Silhouette Mint

One of my Black Friday/Christmas presents to myself was a major haul from Silhouette during their extended Black Friday sale. I had a pretty good idea that my parents were going to buy me a Portrait, so my original intent was to stock up on blades and cutting mats.

One thing led to another, as is the natural course of things, and I became fixated on this curious little machine; a custom stamp creator that uses "thermal printing" (their quotes, not mine), 3D reliefs, and ink to create a permanent stamp that can be used up to 50 times per ink application.

In a method similar to the fabled "I only wanted two things" store trips, I checked out with far more than I had gone in for. On top of the blades and cutting mats, I walked out with a Mint starter bundle and the Super-Special-Awesome-Ultra-Deluxe Exclusive Once-in-a-Lifetime Mint Accessories Bundle. In other words, the Ultimate Silhouette Mint Accessories Bundle.

Satin Suzie Scents - Cranberry Festival

Scent Description: A scrumptious blend of tart cranberries, oranges, apples and the perfect touch of spices.

Date Poured: November 22, 2016

Weight Melted: 0.7 oz

Location of Warmer: Living room, in tealight warmer

Cold Sniff: 4/5 A pleasant cranberry scent with a healthy heaping of oranges, a hint of crunchy red apples, and an even smaller hint of spices.

Warm Sniff: 4/5 This took on a very strong note of something very similar to Vanilla Bean Noel, while still maintaining the rest of its scent notes. Quite a surprise, but I wouldn't call it a bad one.

Scent Strength: 2/3

Scent Throw: 3/3 This filled the entire living room.

Melting Power: 4/5 I got about six and a half hours of scent from half of a scent shot.

Repurchase: Yes!
